“Sail training has long been recognized as a character-building experience for young people.” says Dawn Santamaria, founder of Sisters Under Sail. “As a mother of four daughters, I know from our family's personal experience that sail training, specifically with young girls, builds confidence, self-esteem and teaches respect for themselves, each other and their community.”
Saint Mary's College, rooted in its history of pioneering change, established the Center for Women InterCultural Leadership in 2000 with the generous support of the Lilly Endowment, Inc. CWIL's mission is to foster the intercultural knowledge and competence critical to educating the next generation of women leaders.
Sisters Under Sail, in partnership with CWIL and the City of Chicago, are developing a leadership program for teenage girls designed to reward academically strong, diverse and under represented high school students from the City of Chicago and the greater South Bend community. More details will be available on this exciting program later this spring.
